The first is located at the Bacon Woods Picnic Area by the Amphitheater and has close access to drinking fountains, restrooms, and a picnic shelter. Small tributaries enter the park from both east and west forming deep cuts into the bedrock. It has several slides and plenty of things to climb on! These smaller streams form micro-climates in which more northerly species of plants may survive in the cooler environments. The Lorain County Metro Parks portion runs from Elyria to Kipton, passing through Oberlin along the way. This 550-acre park was developed in 2005 through a collaboration between the Lorain County Metro Parks and the Village of Wellington and provides opportunities for hiking, biking, strolling, fishing, boating, and wildlife observation. Cascade Park is comprised of three sections: the main entrance located at 387 Furnace Street, 19 Acres at the northern end of the park off Floradale Street, and Elywood situated on the east side of the river accessible from Washington Avenue. This was the home to quite a few bears until 1980. Cascades uniquely rugged scenery is particularly striking given its location in the heart of Lorain Countys 2nd largest city. Not being from Elyria, I have only hubby's recounting his childhood escapades at Cascade Park. Swimming is only allowed at three parks or reservations in the park district. The bears were saved from a terrible flood of the Black River. Lorain County Metro Parks assumed operations of Cascade Park in 2014 through a partnership with the City of Elyria. The unsigned trail to the west falls on the Black River starts directly across the road from the splash pad.
